The question ECGS wanted answered

East Coast Gear Supply sells ring and pinion gears, install kits, lockers, carriers, axle shafts and complete axle assemblies. It is a catalog where many parts look alike and differ only by axle, ratio or spline count, so shoppers tend to arrive knowing exactly what they want and type it in.

  • Shoppers search by part number and by axle. A query like “Toyota 8 clamshell” or “SS-T8CS” has one right answer, and the search box has to find it.
  • The store ran its original keyword search. It worked, but nobody had measured what it was costing in sales.
  • ECGS wanted a number, not an opinion. The goal was to measure whether better search logic and live product suggestions would make shoppers spend more.

What changed

Our PartsLogic team set up PartsLogic search on the ECGS store, on the same catalog and the same pages, and switched it on in place of the legacy search for half of all shoppers.

Search logic

  • Search built for parts catalogs, so a part number, an axle name or a plain description lands on the right product the first time.
  • Matching categories are offered next to products, so a shopper browsing by axle can jump straight to the right section.

Live suggestions

  • Products appear as the shopper types, with photo, part number and price.
  • A shopper can click straight through to the product page without ever loading a search results page.

How it was tested

It ran as a straight 50/50 A/B test for three full business weeks, November 29 to December 20, 2023. About 25,000 shoppers were enrolled: half got the legacy search (A), half got PartsLogic (B). The measure that decided it was revenue per user.

PartsLogic was ahead from the day the test launched and stayed ahead on every one of the 21 days, from about 3% on its weakest day to about 44% on its best. Averaged over the three weeks, revenue per user was 32.7% higher with PartsLogic.

Where the lift came from

What was measuredResult with PartsLogic
Search engagement on mobileUp more than 18%
Searches where the shopper clicked a suggested productMore than 25%
Visits to the search results pageDown 7.4%
  • Phones gained the most. Search engagement on mobile rose more than 18%, where typing is slow and a good suggestion saves the most effort.
  • One in four searches ended on a suggestion. In more than 25% of the searches sampled, the shopper clicked a suggested product straight from the search box.
  • Fewer trips through results pages. Visits to the search results page fell 7.4% because shoppers were finding the part in the suggestions instead.

Why 32.7% is the conservative number

The largest orders in the test came overwhelmingly from the PartsLogic side: 75% of the highest-value orders went through PartsLogic search. To keep a handful of big orders from inflating the result, the report excluded orders above the 95th percentile before comparing the two sides. That is how the lift came out at +32.7%.

Counting orders up to the 97th percentile instead, the revenue increase was close to +63%.

The report puts the test at more than $14,000 in additional revenue over three weeks and, with PartsLogic rolled out to every shopper, projects more than $245,000 a year from the store’s existing visitors, without more ad spend or traffic.

What ECGS shoppers see today

After the test, PartsLogic replaced the legacy search for every ECGS shopper, and it is still the search on the store today. Typing into the search box opens a full-width panel with matching categories on top and products underneath, each with its photo, part number and price. On a phone the same panel fills the screen under the search box.

Why it worked

None of this bought more traffic. ECGS made more per visitor from shoppers who were already on the site and already searching. In a gear and axle catalog, a shopper who types a part number or an axle name is close to buying; showing the right part, with its photo and price, before they press Enter turns more of those searches into sales.
